A prolific shoplifter has been jailed after repeatedly targeting a busy city-centre Boots store, stealing hundreds of pounds’ worth of shampoo and other hair products in a series of brazen thefts carried out within hours.

30-year-old Ryan Burgess struck the Boots on Market Street, Liverpool, three times on Monday 3 November, returning to the same location within minutes to steal more goods.
The court heard that Burgess first entered the store at around 11:15am, stealing £191 worth of shampoo and conditioner. Only fifteen minutes later, he re-entered the shop and stole a further £121 in similar products. He returned again at 4:20pm, taking another £50 worth of shampoo.
The theft spree did not end there. Just days later, Burgess returned to the same branch on 13 November, stealing £116 worth of hair products, followed by another incident on 14 November, when he took items valued at £120.
He was also charged with separate thefts including £84 worth of cleaning products from B&M on 7 July, and £10 worth of confectionery from a Spar store on 26 October.
In total, Burgess faced 11 counts of theft from a shop. He pleaded guilty to all charges.
On Thursday 4 December, Burgess was sentenced to nine months in prison at Liverpool Magistrates' Court.
Neighbourhood Inspector Stacey Pope of Merseyside Police condemned the repeated thefts, describing Burgess’s actions as “blatant and brazen.” She emphasised the impact of repeated retail crime on businesses, saying:
“Retail crime is not a victimless offence. These persistent thefts endanger jobs, drive up prices, and place significant strain on retailers and staff. We will continue working closely with businesses to tackle offenders who repeatedly target our high streets.”
The case forms part of Merseyside Police’s ongoing efforts to crack down on shoplifting and support retailers across Liverpool city centre.
