Three men have been imprisoned in connection with a string of shop robberies in Northampton.

Between September and October 2023, Rufus Johnson Cuthbertson, aged 28, Darren Guthrie, aged 37, and Adam Mark Crampton, aged 30, all formerly of Northampton, carried out several robberies across the town.

Coop stores were their primary target, with shops in Latchet Lane, Bushland Road, Semilong Road, Main Road, and Birchfield Road East being raided, resulting in the theft of cigarettes, alcohol, and scratch cards.

The group frequently resorted to threats of violence to coerce compliance, even going as far as threatening staff members with dirty needles.

All three men were apprehended following an investigation by CID officers at Northamptonshire Police and charged with multiple offences.

Cuthbertson faced charges of two counts of shoplifting and nine counts of burglary and theft. Guthrie was charged with one count of robbery and four counts of burglary and theft. Crampton faced two counts of burglary and theft.

Having pleaded guilty to the offences at Northampton Crown Court in October and December 2023, all three men returned to the same court this month for sentencing. Cuthbertson received a 21 months, 6 day prison sentence, Guthrie was sentenced to 13 months, 25 days, and Crampton received 10 months, 11 days.

Lead Investigator Detective Sergeant Pete Ticehurst commented, “I'm pleased to see these three men sentenced to prison for their crimes.

“These were audacious acts, often committed during daylight hours, leaving staff members understandably terrified and concerned for their safety.

“Tackling serious violence is a top priority for Northamptonshire Police, and we will continue to do everything in our power to ensure individuals like Cuthbertson, Guthrie, and Crampton are brought to justice.”
