Wembley, London Catch a Thief UK News
A dramatic attempted robbery in Wembley, northwest London, ended in a courageous stand by a shopkeeper who fought off the assailant after the man threatened to set both him and the store on fire.

The incident unfolded on the morning of Sunday, 14 December 2025, at approximately 08:45 GMT when a hooded man entered a local convenience store and approached the counter, demanding cash. CCTV footage shared widely on social media shows the suspect brandishing what is believed to be a petrol-filled container.
Threat with Petrol and Fire
According to eyewitnesses and the video evidence, the suspect repeatedly threatened the shopkeeper, allegedly shouting: “Give me all the money now or I’ll set you on fire.”
During the confrontation, the attacker poured a reddish liquid onto the floor and around the counter area, widely assumed to be petrol. The presence of the flammable liquid raised the stakes dramatically, turning what might have been a routine late-morning robbery into a life-threatening situation for the shopkeeper and anyone nearby.

Shopkeeper’s Heroic Response
Faced with the prospect of fire being used as a weapon against him, the shopkeeper retreated briefly to retrieve a shovel from storage. With the improvised tool in hand, he confronted the assailant inside the store in a struggle that lasted around three minutes, according to the footage.
The brave shopkeeper used the shovel to ward off the armed robber, striking him and forcing him out of the premises. During the attempted, robbery and arson, the suspect attempted to grab cash from the till and even reached behind the counter, but was ultimately pushed back out of the shop.
Another individual, possibly a colleague or passer by who entered the store, also helped to push the suspect toward the exit. The dramatic footage ends shortly after the man fled the scene.
Public Reaction and Police Involvement
Local residents and internet users have praised the shopkeeper’s quick thinking and bravery in a situation where hesitation may have led to serious injury or worse. Many commented online that the presence of petrol inside the store made this more than just a theft, it was potentially an act of attempted arson.
As of December 2025, the Metropolitan Police had been approached for comment, but no public statement regarding arrests or charges had yet been issued by authorities.
Safety and Legal Questions
Incidents like this highlight the risks shopkeepers face daily, particularly during robberies where weapons or dangerous materials like flammable liquids are involved. UK self-defence law allows individuals to use reasonable force in defence of themselves or others, a point widely discussed online in relation to this case.
Whether the shopkeeper will face any legal scrutiny as a result of using force remains to be seen, but many commentators have noted that in situations where a life-threatening weapon is involved, proportionate response is recognised under UK law.
