Derbyshire Police confirmed officers responded promptly after the sighting, with armed units securing the area and ensuring the safety of shoppers. “Officers attended the Derbion shopping centre earlier today after reports of a group of teenagers seen with a firearm,” said a spokesperson. “Public safety was our top priority.”

Three teenagers were arrested inside the shopping centre. The “gun” reported by members of the public was later confirmed to be an imitation firearm. Following police enquiries, one of the teenagers was released without charge.

Shoppers described a tense scene, with officers quickly evacuating sections of the centre and managing crowds to prevent panic. Despite the alarm, there were no injuries reported.

The incident highlights the serious response triggered by sightings of weapons, even when they turn out to be replicas. Armed officers in the UK are trained to treat such reports as potentially life-threatening until the situation is fully assessed.

Derby is one of the East Midlands’ largest shopping centres, welcoming thousands of visitors daily. Police thanked the public for their cooperation during the operation and urged anyone with information about similar incidents to come forward.

“While the firearm turned out to be imitation, reports like this cannot be taken lightly,” the Derbyshire Police statement added. “We remain committed to keeping our community safe.”
